Why ClickHouse? What Can It Do?

ClickHouse is like a super-fast calculator for billions of rows—so you can answer "how much?", "how many?", and "what changed?" in milliseconds.

What is ClickHouse?

ClickHouse is a columnar analytics database. Instead of storing data row-by-row (like a spreadsheet), it stores each column separately. So when you ask "what's the total revenue?", it only reads the revenue column—not every column of every row. That's why it can crunch billions of rows in the blink of an eye.

Think of it this way: Row database = one folder per customer with everything inside. ClickHouse = one big drawer of "revenue numbers," one drawer of "dates," etc. To sum revenue, you open just one drawer!

Real-Life Examples: What ClickHouse Can Do

Example 1: Uber / Lyft – Trip Analytics

Problem: Millions of rides every day. How do you know "revenue by city last week" or "average trip length by hour"?
ClickHouse: Store every ride as a row (time, city, distance, fare). Query with SUM(fare), AVG(distance), GROUP BY city. Answers in milliseconds.
Result: Dashboards and reports that stay fast even as data grows to billions of rows.

Example 2: Cloudflare – Web Traffic & Security

Problem: Trillions of HTTP requests. Who's attacking? What's the 99th percentile latency?
ClickHouse: Ingest logs at scale, run aggregations (count by IP, percentile by path). Filter by time range and skip irrelevant data thanks to columnar storage.
Result: Real-time security dashboards and instant answers for "top attacking countries" or "slowest endpoints."

Example 3: Spotify / Netflix – Event Analytics

Problem: Every play, pause, skip, and search is an event. How do you analyze "most played genres" or "drop-off by minute"?
ClickHouse: Stream events into ClickHouse. Query with GROUP BY, window functions, and time-based filters. Use materialized views for pre-aggregated dashboards.
Result: Product and growth teams get instant insights without waiting for overnight batch jobs.

Example 4: E‑commerce – Orders & Revenue

Problem: Millions of orders. "Revenue by day," "top products by region," "cohort retention."
ClickHouse: Store orders (date, product_id, region, revenue). Run SUM(revenue), GROUP BY toDate(date), region. Use ReplacingMergeTree for "latest state" if you need updates.
Result: Finance and marketing get fast reports; no more slow queries on the main transaction database.
